London Health House

A recently completed project in Turnpike Lane, London, by WILLIAM TOZER Associates

With its swimming pool and outdoor sunbathing spaces, the London Health House recalls the Lovell Health House by Richard Neutra, and its precursor, the Lovell Beach House by Rudolph Schindler. Like our practice, both Schindler and Neutra were heavily influenced by Adolf Loos, and the work of Neutra is characterised by sculptural compositions of rectilinear planes and volumes, rather like our own projects. The London Health House comprises a new outbuilding, a rear extension to the ground floor, roof and loft extensions, and internal refurbishment throughout. While the articulation of timber ceilings and walls recalls Neutra’s other houses, the heavily figured marble to the kitchen and bathrooms is reminiscent of the work of Loos himself. Glass block walls on the top floor are a nod to another major influence on the work of our practice, Pierre Chareau’s Maison de Verre, and create an evocative play of light, silhouette, and shadow.
